Art Therapy Exercise #8

The goal is to increase self-awareness and explore issues in the patient’s home environment.

  • Discuss the meaning of various elements on the welcome mat including any messages written
  • Talk about the overall feel of the mat; is it welcoming, chaotic, depressing?
  • Encourage the patient to share thoughts and feelings about the picture
  • Discuss how the patient’s home environment affects every part of their life including their emotional and mental well being.

Instructions

On a sheet of drawing paper, have the patient draw a large rectangle and then create a design for a welcome mat that represents who they are (or who they see themselves to be). The patient can write a message in addition to using differing shapes, lines, and colors.
